Keep tyres inflated to the recommended pressure. Tyres with low pressure or tread can be dangerous, impair your cars handling & cause tyres to wear down prematurely. Check your tyre pressures once a week & also check for cuts, bulges & excessive tread wear. Uneven tyre wear can indicate incorrect wheel alignment. Bad tyre pressures can noticeably affect fuel economy.
Make sure that all your lights are clean & working, including the brake lights, indicators & hazards. Lights are a key form of communication between road users, lights failing to work at the right time could be the cause of an accident. Keep spare bulbs & fuses in your vehicle.
Check your oil level regularly. To check accurately - Park on level ground & wait until the engine is cool, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, insert it fully & remove it again. The oil should be between the minimum & maximum markings (this usually represents approximately 1 litre), If it is low add some, being careful not to overfill as this can also cause damage to your engine. Ensure you use the correct type of oil for your vehicle. Driving a vehicle with little or no oil can have a detrimental effect on the engine & could result in very expensive repairs. A complete oil change should be carried out in line with your manufacturers specified intervals.
To check your coolant level, wait until the engine is cool & the vehicle is parked on level ground. The outside of the coolant bottle should have "low" & "high" markings, the level of coolant inside the bottle should be between the two. When topping up your coolant tank you should use a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze & water. (Adding water alone will weaken your coolant strength)
If your wiper blades are leaving behind dirty smears or tiny scratches, it's time to clean or replace them. Ineffective wiper blades can cause a serious accident especially on motorways where you will be unable to stop to resolve impaired vision.
Make sure the washer fluid is filled up to the maximum mark, but take care not to overfill. Again leaving your vehicle without any screen wash could result in an accident if you cannot clear the screen when its needed.
Check the brake fluid level is between the minimum & maximum marks. Driving with low levels of brake fluid can be dangerous. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning it attracts moisture, once moisture gets into the brake fluid the less effective it is. Brake fluid should be completely changed every two years.
